EXHIBITION RUNS:
February 9 to March 8, 2012

Featuring works by:
David Bell
Aaron Dadacay
Maria Villote

Both verb and noun defines opposing terms, in which it can be labelled as either useful or obsolete, a constructive tool or merely a worthless burden. In this exhibition, three individuals collaboratively present a body of work that deals with re-identification, utilitarianism, and site specificity as they not only break the spacial boundaries, but also reconfigure the exterior within the interior.
These items often condemned as utilitarian objects are rendered useless by such gestures, almost like ornamentation because of works’ placement within an enclosed space. Indeed, the McNish Gallery in which the exhibition will be held was once identified as an idea of a home, now redundantly shares the sterility of the objects within its interior.

David Bell
After being raised on an ecological nature preserve in Murrieta, California, David Lucas Bell spent three years with the United States Forest Service fighting fires across Southern California and later worked as a Park Ranger in Central Florida, where he then decided to shift his focus to the arts.
After two years of studying photography and design in Tampa, David traveled overseas and attended Santa Reparata International School of Art & Design in Florence, Italy, taking classes in architectural drawing.
He was later accepted to an Interdisciplinary Metafora School of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, Spain, where he dedicated his energy purely to sculpture and installation art. During this time, he took part in numerous collaborative shows that aimed to show conceptual work in alternative spaces.
In the Fall of 2009, David elected to continue his study at UCLA . Through performance and mixed media installation he articulated his need to problematize human relationships with support structures that can be both physically and mentally obtrusive. He is active in the art community, participating in various collaborative shows throughout Los Angeles, most recently a duo show with Noah Spindler at Control Room, entitled Lean On Me. He is currently heading a project titled Dave Gallery, that aims to provide the necessary video equipment and prepitory work for serious artists wishing to display their work “professionally” albeit in non-traditional spaces.

David Bells’s brief statement about “Trough”
Trough (Troth)
“The beer trough exists to support the exhausted art viewer, although it may be the least user-friendly object-it is the most fun, fitting as many as four at a time. Everyone is invited to participate in the artists’ shared regression.”

Aaron Dadacay
“I was born and raised in the bureaucratic capital of the Philippines during a discourse of one martial lawed regime, a successful presidential impeachment, and two People’s Power revolutions. After finishing high school in an “all boys” institution, acquiring experience in technical drafting, I’ve decided to abandon the career field of architecture and instead, devote myself in the field of fine arts. I moved here in Ventura County at the age of sixteen and attended Oxnard college in 2004. There, I practiced art for four years and received an associate’s degree in studio arts. In fall of 2008, I was accepted in the UCLA arts program and there received a very promising degree in art. Now, I work for the Fowler Museum as a carpenter.”

Maria Villote
Villote received a B.A. in Art Practice from UC Berkeley. She has exhibited around Los Angeles and Ventura Counties and also the East Bay in places such as Jaus, 18th Street Arts Center and Upfront gallery. As one of the founding members and co-curator of ONS Projects (Project: One Night Stand), site-specific, experimental projects throughout Ventura county which feature the work of local students, emerging and established artists. Currently, she is living and working in Southern California.

Statement
I’m interested in the human experience, symbiosis, and the vicissitudes of the interaction between the work and the viewer/consumer. In the construct of a hypereality and the use of metaphors and parallels, I try to seduce my audience, playing on their expectations and assumptions based on their preconceived notions. Through the lure and allure, I pull the viewer in hoping that their experience and understanding of the work will unfold into a dialectic gaze.

RECEPTION:
NOVEMBER 8, 4:00 – 6:00 pm; Artist Talk at 4:30 pm

October 25, 2011, Oxnard, CA: The McNish Gallery at Oxnard College is proud to present a solo exhibition by renowned abstract painter Jack Reilly. The exhibition opens on November 7 and continues through December 15, 2011. An opening will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 4:00 to 6:00 pm with an artist lecture at 4:30 pm at Oxnard College’s McNish Gallery.

Reilly is known as one of the original artists from the Abstract Illusionism movement of the late 1970’s. For three decades has maintained an affinity for simplicity in painting through a visually complex and laborious technique. Thousands of brushstrokes in acrylic polymers and metallic pigment are painted on geometric shaped-canvas structures. Reilly combines theoretical systems and elements of serendipity arranged within linear formats that interact with the shape of the canvas, sometimes straddling the line between painting and sculpture.

Jack Reilly received his M.F.A. from Florida State University in 1978 and shortly thereafter he moved to Los Angeles. Reilly is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant and numerous other awards. His paintings are included in major public, private and corporate collections internationally. He is Chair of the Art Department and Professor of Art at California State University Channel Islands.

DATES:
OCTOBER 3 – OCTOBER 29, 2011

RECEPTION:
OCTOBER 6, 4:00 – 6:00 pm ; Artist Talk at 4:30 pm

September 19, 2011, Oxnard, CA:In celebration of National Filipino-American History Month in October, the McNish Gallery at Oxnard College is very proud to present Filipino Sensation, an exhibition featuring work by twelve Filipino-American contemporary artists. The exhibition will open on October 3 and run through October 29, 2011. A reception for the artists will take place on Thursday, October 6 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm with an artist talk at 4:30. The exhibition brings together emerging and established artists from Los Angeles and the Bay area including Christopher Sicat, Gina Osterloh, Cirilo Domine, Alvin P. Gregorio, Jay Lizo, Tala Mateo, Charmaine Felix-Meyer, Christine Morla, Aaron Dadacay, W. Don Flores, Maria Villote and Gerard Mercado.

In his most recent “Tag-A-Log” series, Chris Sicat (New York Academy MFA/Otis Parsons BFA) investigates the natural rhythmic process of marking with graphite on found tree trunks, planks of wood and branches resulting in a luminous graphite surface. Gina Osterloh(UCI MFA/De Paul University BA) creates surreal images of performances involving a lonesome figure and a room covered entirely with cheerful cut-up bond paper. Using the metaphor of camouflage Osterloh questions the boundaries between self and environment. After residing in Japan for four years, Cirilo Domine (UCI MFA) will feature a series on paper of forms reminiscent of cloud formations and topographies. The series documents Shibuya’s Hachiko station from the ground resulting in a traffic record seen from below of footsteps, grime, tobacco and hair trapped in postcards. Informed by psychoanalysis and feminism, Charmaine Felix-Meyer (Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA/SFAI BFA) explores elements of architecture and construction to create environments, drawings and objects that examine personal history and domestic space. Alvin P. Gregorio (CGU MFA/BFA CSUF) combines abstract painting and street art aesthetics to show expressions of immigration, fragility of family, spirituality and violence & war. In her Twilight series, Tala Mateo (UCI MFA/BA UCSC) reconfigures feminine products to negotiate the power and vulnerability of beauty and gender. Inspired by the simple and bold aesthetic of Hiroshige’s seasonal prints, Jay Lizo’s (UCSB MFA) paintings represent an imaginary “getaway place” for dealing with the repetition of daily work. Adopting traditional weaving techniques taught by her father, Christine Morla (CGU MFA/LMU BA) uses candy wrapper to create all over, geometric and floral abstractions that recall fantastical landscapes. Aaron Dadacay (UCLA BFA) often explores the body in relation to human-trafficking through sculpture and installation. Maria Villote (UC Berkeley/BA) refers to her practice as durational performances. Villote alters natural wood surfaces with hyper-realistic flesh paintings to create visually, vibrating displays of imagery. Often using digital weather maps from Google earth and packaging material as a source of inspiration, W. Don Flores (Ateneo de Manila University, B.S. Psycholgy/current MFA candidate at Cal Arts) paints abstractions of mental maps that incorporates memory and geography. Through the process of creating a series of brush marks, drips and scraping off of pigment, Gerard Mercado (LMU BA) explores the idea of art as the language of transcendence whose appeal is both sensuous and spiritual.

643 PROJECT SPACE – 643 N. VENTURA AVE., VENTURA, CA
www.643projectspace.com

EXHIBITION RUNS: September 2 – 30, 2011

643 A Project Space is pleased to announce an exhibition by Roger Lee. In a combination of both traditional and non-traditional processes of ceramics, Lee’s work explores the sensual relationship between the object and the body. He investigates forms that address sensuality within objects that are intimate in form, scale, surface, gesture, and the human interaction. In this exhibition Lee attempts to provoke a playful gesture inviting the sense of touch, hoping to evoke a visceral response from his work.

Roger Lee received his MFA from Clemson University in South Carolina and his BFA from San Jose State University, California. He currently teaches Ceramics and Beginning Sculpture at Oxnard College and works as a Studio Potter/ Technician at Heath Ceramics, Los Angeles. http://www.rogerleeceramics.com

A reception will be held on Friday, September 2, 2011 from 5:00-8:00 pm. The show is free and open to the public. 643 A Project Space is an alternative contemporary art gallery exhibiting emerging and established national and international artists. The gallery is located near downtown Ventura on the west end at 643 N. Ventura Av, Ventura. For more information, call Monica Furmanski at 805-218-1434 or visit www.643projectspace.com

RECEPTION: Saturday, July 9th, 2011 (5pm – 10pm)
405 South B Street, Suite 3, Oxnard, CA 93033
www.oxnardcollegeart.wordpress.com

Project One Night Stand presents, “For This Purpose Only”, an experimental group show of site-specific work including painting, sculpture, video and installation. The exhibition runs from July 9th through July 30th, 2011 with an opening reception Saturday, July 9th from 5pm to 10pm. The show will feature work by contemporary artists from Los Angeles, Oxnard and the Bay Area including Curt Lemieux, Kristina Farragher, SaeRi Cho Dobson, Gul Cagin, Ichiro Irie, Aska Iida, Christine Morla, Aaron Dadacay, Gladys Rodriguez, Olguin Tapia, Maria Villote, Raul J. Valdez, Sara Kono, Cole Montgomery, Eric Vrymoed, and David Bell.

Project O.N.S. will piece together fragmented trails of historical facts and fallacies, to reconstruct a site’s identity based on their experiential understanding of the physical location; in this case, a former law office in Downtown Oxnard. The legal term “For This Purpose Only” or “Ad Hoc” in Latin shorthand, is re-contextualized to fit in an art discourse that challenges the meaning of “purpose” as used in the legal term in relation to the exhibition site. Furthermore, the exhibition will demonstrate the role of experimental art in transforming an operative purpose of a site, from a law office to a discursive location for art.

Artists will explore themes centered around the many legal services provided but not restricted to sexual harassment, child abuse, personal injury, birth injury, green card law, car accidents and medical malpractice, as a means of narrative, identity and thought provoking analysis.

Project O.N.S. is an ongoing series of hit and run, experimental art exhibits that take place in unexpected settings throughout Ventura County. It endeavors to function as a forum for exchange between emerging and established artists and a wide reaching public, as well as the exploration of unconventional spaces in the area.

A reception for the artists will take place Saturday July 9th, 5 to 10pm, at 405 South “B” Street, Oxnard, CA 93030. Gallery hours are by appointment only on Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 4pm. For more information or to make an appointment please visit www.oxnardcollegeart.wordpress.com or reach Christine Morla at cmorla@vcccd.edu or (805) 986-5800, ext. 1929.
