The McNish Gallery at Oxnard College is very pleased to present a collaborative exhibit by artists Monica and Matthew Furmanski. An opening reception will take place on Wednesday, January 28th, 2015 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm with an artist lecture at 4:30 pm. The genesis of Monica and Matthew Furmanski’s collaboration begins with chandelier fixtures, thinking about what they represent, their function, as well as their formal designs. Using these concepts as their guide, the artists’ collaborative body of work reveals the visual conversation they are having between photographic images and sculptural forms.
Monica Furmanski received her BFA from Scripps College and MFA from Claremont Graduate University. She has worked with various artists in her career, notably John Baldessari, Susan Rankaitis and Nancy Macko. Monica’s artwork has been shown at the Huntington Beach Art Center, Peggy Phelps Gallery, Fringe Exhibition and the Williamson Gallery among other venues. She has taught photography, drawing and design at Ventura and Oxnard Colleges. Currently, she is a full time Instructor at CATE School.
Matthew Furmanski holds a BFA from Chapman University and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University. He is a recipient of a Durfee ARC grant and has been published in numerous periodicals including the LA Times and Art in America. Matthew has collaborated with other artists and institutions including the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and the Getty. Currently, he is a Professor of Art at California State University, Channel Islands. Both artists operate 643 Project Space in Ventura which highlights the work of emerging, cutting edge artists.
