SELF/CONSCIOUS, a group exhibit by Oxnard College Alumni (Wed. July 8, 2015)

The McNish Gallery at Oxnard College is pleased to present a group exhibit by artists and Oxnard College Alumni Olivia Jones, Gladys Rodriguez and Maria Villote. An opening reception will take place on Wednesday, July 8th , 2015 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

SELF/CONSCIOUS is a group exhibit consisting of works that explore the theme of identity and consciousness. Each artist investigates this theme by experimenting with the use of various mediums, from the traditional – pencil, paint, paper – to the more experimental – re-purposed glue, mop heads, fabric – creating a discussion on the deep rooted idea of Self and the intersecting questions that arise and are central to the human condition and predicament.

Olivia Jones-Hernandez is an artist who creates both visual and sound works. She has been developing her style for over a decade and any medium she works in explores different realms of the abstract. Jones-Hernandez is continuing to build her visual and sonic portfolio that details alien landscapes and unfamiliar figures drawing inspiration from the worlds of science fiction and horror. She lives and works in Camarillo, CA with her cats PetenSteve and Grandma.

Gladys Rodriguez was born in Panama City, Panama and came to the United States at the age of 14. She graduated from California State University, Los Angeles in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Graphic Design. Gladys has exhibited at many galleries and alternative spaces in Ventura County and Los Angeles and some of these include CSULA’s Fine Arts Gallery, 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica, The W.A.V space in Ventura, McNish Gallery in Oxnard and 643 Project Space in Ventura.

Maria Villote received her Bachelor of Arts in Practice of Art from the University of California, Berkeley in 2011. Maria is interested in the human experience, symbiosis, and the vicissitudes of the interaction between the work and the viewer/consumer. Her work seduces her audience, playing on their expectations and assumptions based on their preconceived notions. She has exhibited at numerous galleries in Southern and Northern California like the 18th Street Art Center in Santa Monica, The Control Room in Los Angeles, the Zughaus Gallery in Berkeley and most recently in Mexicali, Mexico.
