The McNish Gallery at Oxnard College is very pleased to present an art exhibit by The League of Imaginary Scientists entitled, “The Incredible Balancing Act.” The exhibition includes playful, interactive art by the League as well as project posters by Oxnard College STEAM and Art Students, whose collaborative campus projects tie into the theme of the Earth’s great balancing act.

The exhibition’s opening is also an on-campus event to celebrate award-winning OC Art students, whose artworks have received much recognition in the last year. The opening reception will take place on Wednesday, March 11th, 2015 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm with an artist lecture at 4:30 pm.

Oxnard College Art faculty Member Lucy HG Solomon brings her art and science collective, The League of Imaginary Scientists to the McNish Art Gallery. OC students and the League contemplate the planet’s disequilibrium in artworks and campus projects that invite audience interaction and community action. After repeating “The Incredible Balancing Act” on untold occasions, the graceful spinning planet is experiencing vertigo. The League of Imaginary Scientists and Oxnard College students respond with graphics, sculptures, and interactive actions. The planet is teetering, and so are we. Viewers are asked to take this high wire act to the biosphere. Participating students are from Christiane Mainzer and Lucy HG Solomon’s collaborating STEAM courses. Their semester-length projects are campus-based inventions, sculptures and green space alterations that respond to the theme of “The Incredible Balancing Act: Earth’s Changing Climate.”

The League of Imaginary Scientists is an art and science collective that creates mega-media constructions of scientific mythologies. The League of Imaginary Scientists has held residencies on “Mars” through the Lovely Weather project in Northwest Ireland, at Australia’s Casula Powerhouse and Electrofringe, and in universities and art spaces across the United States, Australia, Europe, and South America. The League consists of a core group of five artists whose interests lie in technological exploration and scientific inquiry. League projects have received a wide range of support, including support from the Norweigan consulate and the city of Trondheim, the County of Donegal in Ireland, and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Works by the League are archived in libraries and institutions around the globe. Public art projects include an interactive city-building project for Rome, Italy, a participatory timeline of the childhood of Trondheim, Norway, an exploration of communication in Hobart, Tasmania, and the conversion of an outdoor lighting system into a city’s nervous system at UC, San Diego.

Please join us for the opening reception on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, 4:00 – 7:00 pm with an artist lecture at 4:30pm. The McNish Art Gallery is located at 4000 South Rose Avenue, Oxnard, CA. 93033.
